Anchor Text Optimization: A Practical Guide

Published July 2026 · 6 min read · By Saad Zaman

Anchor text, the clickable words in a hyperlink, is one of the strongest topical relevance signals a backlink carries. It's also one of the easiest things to overdo.

The main anchor text types

Exact match: the anchor text is your exact target keyword. Partial match: includes the keyword plus other words. Branded: your company or site name. Naked URL: the raw link itself. Generic: phrases like "click here" or "read more."

Why exact-match anchors are risky at scale

A natural backlink profile has a mix, mostly branded and naked URL anchors, with exact-match keywords making up a small minority. A profile where 40% of links use the exact same exact-match anchor text is a textbook signal of manipulated link building, one of the clearest patterns Google's algorithms flag.

A reasonable anchor text ratio

As a general guide: roughly 50-60% branded or naked URL, 20-30% partial match, and no more than 10-15% exact match. This isn't a hard rule, but it reflects how anchor text accumulates naturally when links are earned rather than engineered. Every placement through our outreach and guest post services is planned against this kind of ratio, not just whatever keyword you'd prefer to rank for.

Frequently asked questions
