AI Search Visibility

What Is an llms.txt File and Do You Need One?

Published July 2026 · 5 min read · By Saad Zaman

As AI crawlers become a meaningful share of traffic to sites, a new proposed standard has emerged to help them understand a site's content more efficiently: llms.txt.

What llms.txt actually does

Similar in spirit to robots.txt, an llms.txt file sits at your site's root and provides a clean, structured summary of your site's key pages and purpose, formatted specifically for large language models to parse efficiently, rather than crawling and interpreting your full HTML.

Is it officially supported by major AI platforms?

As of now, adoption is inconsistent. It's a proposed convention, not a confirmed standard that every AI crawler respects the way robots.txt is universally honored. Treat it as a low-cost, forward-looking addition rather than a guaranteed visibility lever.

Should you implement one now?

Given the low cost of creating one, yes, it's a reasonable addition alongside genuinely useful signals like clean site structure, clear headings, and the kind of AI search visibility fundamentals that matter regardless of whether any specific file standard gets universal adoption.

What people want to know

No, they serve different purposes. Robots.txt controls crawler access, llms.txt provides a structured content summary.

No standard guarantees citation. It's a low-cost signal, not a ranking mechanism with confirmed impact.

At your site's root directory, the same location convention as robots.txt.
